ACSAPRAWA Executive Director, Dr. Uju Agomoh presented a paper on ‘Treatment of female prisoners / offenders: Implementation of the Bangkok rules’ at the third Biennial Conference of Africa Correctional Services Association (ACSA), held in Maputo Mozambique on the July 16 2014.

Ably represented by Barrister Chinelo Uchendu of PRAWA Security and Justice department, shared experiences from Nigeria female prisons to strengthen her presentation on the need for all members of the association to wok according to the rules. Bar. Uchendu also presented a paper on ‘the Role of the family and Community in Reducing Recidivism for a proper re-integration’ sharing her experiences on how PRAWA was able to establish cordial relationship between Toyosi Bello and aggrieved residents of Ago Iwoye community.

The conference which focuses on building the capacity of members was themed ‘Building a Sustainable and Humane Correctional System in Africa – A Collaborative Responsibility’ was declared open by Mozambique President, Armando Guebuza with a welcome address by the Director General of Mozambique National Penitentiary Service, Dr. Eduardo Sebastiao Mussanhane. There were speeches from ACSA Chairperson, Ms. Nontsilelo Jonligana and the Special Guest of Honour, Mozambique Minister of Justice.

The Uganda Commissioner of Prison was elected as the new President of Africa Correctional Services Association (ACSA), while Dr. Ifediorah Orakwe, a Controller of Prisons, with Nigeria Prison Service, was made the Treasurer.
