An In-cell activity board in one of the prison cells at Mpima Remand Prison

Although this section of the UNSMR advocates for keeping inmates busy during the hours of a normal working day, the Mpima Remand Prison has gone an extra length of not only keeping them busy during the normal work hours, but also making sure that while they are locked up in-doors, they are involved in constructive activities.

Every sleeping block in Mpima Remand Prison has a time table written on the walls with activities to be carried out on each day. Different inmates are placed in charge of these activities under the supervision of the cell captain and they include Bible study Classes and quizzes, Current Affairs quizzes, Choir Practice, Lectures and Complaints.

Through these activities, inmates are not only educated and kept busy but are also provided with the opportunity of airing any grievances they might have. Grievances reported by the inmates are reported to the Officer-In-Charge by the cell captain.

The aim of this process is provide a feeling of communal living among the prisoners, facilitate an effective complaints mechanism and discourage the negative indoctrination of inmates.
