The Prisons Rehabilitation and Welfare Action (PRAWA) group has called on media practitioners to support the ongoing prisons reformation advocacy in Nigeria.

The Executive Director of PRAWA, Dr Uju Agomoh, made the call at a news conference in Enugu on Tuesday.

Agomoh stressed the need for the media to join the advocacy as a key player in the nation’s promotion of institutional reforms to boost dispensation of justice.

She also urged the media to continue to canvass for rehabilitation of prisons, social development of prisoners, ex-prisoners and discontinuation of torture of victims.

She advised government to establish prisons, known as bolster homes for young prisoners in all states of the federation.

“This is to avoid a situation where under-aged children will mix up with adult prisoners.

“Pregnant women, nursing mothers, elderly and people with terminal illnesses needed such special homes and treatment as well,’’ she said.

Also speaking, the Public Relations Officer of the Nigerian Prisons, Mr Francis Enaboro, commended the Federal Government for providing some drugs, food items and uniforms for junior staff of the prisons.
