Name of Project: Prison decongestion and the re-entry scheme (PDRS)

Objective:

This project is to support effective Prison Reform through Prison decongestion and re-entry (rehabilitation, reintegration and re-settlement) initiatives.
It aims at facilitating mechanisms to ensure the sustainability and institutionalization of initiatives geared towards reducing prison inmate population and a reduction in offending/re-offending behaviour. 

Current Activities:

The following are ongoing activities:
- Identification and training of volunteers for the scheme
- Identification and sensitisation of partners and mentors for the scheme
- Impact / Class litigation on selected awaiting trial inmates and prisoner
- Training and provision of direct support to released inmates
- Public awareness on the scheme

Proposed Activities:

- Review meeting on jail delivery exercise [awaiting trial/remand prisoners’ releases]
- Strategic meeting to facilitate comprehensive support services to the target group
- Training of prison inmates on re-entry
- Development of implementation manual and training for prison staff on re-entry
- Strengthening of the prerogative of mercy committees (an oversight mechanism which recommends prisoners for amnesty).

Name of Project: Mental Health and Prison Project [Diverting Mentally-III Persons from Prisons]
Location:
Nigeria

Objective of Project:
The goal is to strengthen forensic psychiatric practice towards prisons and justice sector reforms in Nigeria through: 
 (i)   
facilitating mechanism to ensure the institutionalization of initiatives geared towards diverting mentally-ill persons from prison custody to psychiatric hospital/community;
 
(ii) providing relevant court, prison and community-based support services/ interventions towards

Activities:

The project goal/purpose will be achieved through:
(i)   Raising awareness about the problem of detaining mentally-ill persons in prisons;
(ii)  Developing strategies for preventing/reducing the practice of detaining mentally-ill persons in prisons;
(iii) Facilitating the diversion of mentally-ill prisoners within the South East to the Federal Neuro-psychiatric Hospital Enugu;
(iv) Developing strategy for establishing internal and external oversight mechanism to promote effect treatment and management of the target group;
(v)  Addressing the violations of the rights of the mentally-ill persons through litigation and advocacy.
(vi) Promoting Legislative Reforms on the issue;
(vii) Supporting the provision of re-entry (rehabilitation, re-settlement and re-integration) for the target group; and
(viii)Promoting research and documentation activities on the issue.
